Nutritional Needs.
First Trimester According to Ayurveda
Upon conception all three doshas begin to increase in your body. You may notice an increase of vata, pitta or kapha appearing in different ways. The egg is fertilized and then takes time (and needs stability!) in order to be implanted into the uterine wall. There is a lot of inner activity and the "details" of your baby's body are being developed. Cell differentiation takes place, the baby's senses and motor organs are formed, the genitals develop, and cartilage turns into bones. Ayurveda strongly recommends the avoidance of travel during this trimester to promote stability in the uterus, as well as more gentle exercise (rather than fast paced and intense), like walking and yoga.
1st month: Immediately, from the moment of conception, the sperm and egg unite to form a soft mass. This is called kalala, “the first expression of creation.” Immediately there is consciousness in the embryo, and everything you consume through your five senses will leave an impression on your baby. Ayurveda says that nutrition starts at conception. All seven dhatus or tissues begin to form from this soft mass, and by the end of the first month, the rasa dhatu (plasma and lymph) has matured. Ayurveda recommends that you eat butter, ghee, and milk regularly in the first month and to take special care to not over heat (such as taking extremely hot baths, sitting in a hot tub, or getting heat stroke in the sun, this will put your baby at risk). Although you are now likely past your first month of pregnancy, it would still be beneficial to nourish your rasa dhatu and eat tissue building foods such as milk, butter, and ghee throughout your first trimester and all of pregnancy.
2nd month: The three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha, are formed in the baby’s body from the five elements. Rakta dhatu (blood) matures by the end of the second month. Milk, lightly spiced with sweet spices, is recommended.
