Baby Ubtan Powder: Ayurvedic Butterfly Pea Flower "Soap"

$14.00

Ubtan powder, or Ayurvedic “Soap”, is used traditionally after an abhyanga oil massage to absorb any excess oil while softening and gently cleansing the skin.

While the besan, or chickpea flour, absorbs excess oil, the lavender and butterfly pea flower gently soothe and calm baby’s skin, reducing redness, dryness, or irritation. Butterfly pea flower is traditionally used in Ayurveda in devotional ceremonies to represent protection, love, and peace. It is associated with the Goddess Aparajita, whose name means “the undefeated one”. It is also commonly used in beauty formulas to promote healthy skin.

Suggested Use: Use as-is as an udvartana or dusting powder after an abhyanga oil massage by gently dusting over the skin and then rinsing off. Or, make into ubtan by using the recipe below. When made into a “soap”, it can be used after abhyanga, or during bath time in general. No other soap is needed when using ubtan powder. For external use only. Only begin use after the umbilical cord has fallen off.

Soap Recipe:

1 1/2 teaspoons ubtan powder

2 1/2 tablespoons of milk or coconut milk

Instructions: In a small stainless steel bowl or measuring cup (this would work best in a small milk steamer or spice pan), mix ubtan powder with enough milk to form a paste. Mix well and then add the rest of the milk. Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. When it begins to bubble and thicken, it is ready. Make sure the mixture has cooled before applying to your babe's skin. Since it is made with milk, this soap should be made fresh before each bath.

Container size: 1.5 oz

Servings per container: Approximately 14 baths for baby if using measurements above.

Ingredients: Organic chickpea flour*, lavender flower powder*, butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) flower powder*
